Draupadi Murmu was born on 20 June 1958 in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha in a Santali tribal family to Biranchi Narayan Tudu. Troubled his father and grandfather were village heads under the Panchayati Raj system.

Draupadi Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker who died in 2014. The couple had two sons, both of whom passed away, and a daughter, Itishree Murmu.

Draupadi Murmu Teaching Career

Draupadi Murmu started out as a school teacher before entering state politics. Murmu worked as an Assistant Professor at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur and as a Junior Assistant in the Irrigation Department, Government of Odisha.

Draupadi Murmu’s political career

Draupadi Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. In 2000, she became the President of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat and also served as the National Vice President of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha.

Draupadi Murmu: Governor of Jharkhand

Draupadi Murmu took oath as the Governor of Jharkhand on 18 May 2015 and became the first woman governor of Jharkhand. She was the first woman tribal leader from Odisha to be appointed as the Governor of an Indian state.

Draupadi Murmu, as governor of Jharkhand in 2017, refused to assent to a bill approved by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly seeking amendments to the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act, 1908 and the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act, 1949.

The bill sought to give tribals the right to commercially use their land, as well as ensure that the ownership of the land does not change.

In June 2022, Draupadi Murmu was nominated by the BJP as the National Democratic Alliance’s candidate for President of India for the 2022 election. He visited various states as part of the countrywide Presidential Campaign 2022 to garner support for his candidature from BJP MPs and other opposition parties.

Draupadi Murmu visited the northeastern states, Odisha’s BJD, Jharkhand’s JMM Party, Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena, Uttar Pradesh’s BSP, Karnataka’s JDS and many other major opposition parties extended their support.

Draupadi Murmu took oath as the 15th President of India on 25 July 2022. Chief Justice of India N.V. Raman administered the oath in the Central Hall of Parliament. The outgoing President of India Ram Nath Kovind and Draupadi Murmu arrive in Parliament in a ceremonial procession shortly before the swearing-in begins.

In her address, President of India Draupadi Murmu thanked the MPs and MLAs for electing her as the first tribal president of India. In his first address as the President of the world’s largest democracy, he said, “I am the first President of the country who was born in independent India. We have to intensify our efforts to meet the expectations of our freedom fighters. Citizens of independent India.”
